Namnet synes urspr. ha varit Biskopsbol 'Biskopsgård(en)', sedermera förkortat till *Bispbol och *Bissbol; skrivningarna Bisse- o. d. torde bero på kamerala skrivvanor. Senare har namnet missuppfattats ss. innehållande samma f. led. som gården Bäs(s)ebol i Stavnäs sn Gillbergs hs (om vilken se SOV IV s. 25). Det nutida uttalet är påfallande.
